We were approached by the church management to improve in-house AV and lighting facilities and provide on-going production management for event managers. The building is a Grade 1 listed Hawskmoor design winning numerous architectural awards following the £10M refurbishment completed in 2004. The high level of architectural finish and the proximity to local residents has thrown up significant challenges when considering event production solutions. The brief was to install a high-tech digital Audio-Video distribution and control system that was highly flexible, yet effectively ‘invisible’ so as not to detract from the architecture.
The installation has required our technical team to design many bespoke components that solve particular problems. The HD projectors are mounted on wooden supports designed to integrate with the existing columns, and use invisible clamps for stability because wall-fixings were prohibited. The projection screens are mounted on bespoke free-standing supports cleverly designed to fit perfectly between the two columns without any mechanical fixing points, and can be removed by a single person.
The temporary uplighters are all wirelessly controlled to minimise wiring, and the audio distribution network connects the 4 event spaces using a CAT5 Dante network that can be easily reconfigured for worship events, conferences, weddings, gala dinners etc by the events team. A small-format L’Acoustics PA was chosen for its proven reliability and sonic performance especially for live music – an increasingly common demand within progressive churches.
